Come for the Burger, Stay for the Hot Dog (and Fries)

Five Guys is famous for one thing: their burgers.

Juicy, greasy and delicious Five Guys burgers are some of the best in the country. With an unlimited amount of toppings and the joy of watching it made right before you, there is nothing like a Five Guys burger.

Today, however I ventured into unknown territory to try a rarely promoted and often forgotten menu item at Five Guys.....the hot dog.

Knowing how amazing the burgers are, it was difficult for me to change things up and try the hot dog. However, it was cheaper and I have never done it before so I figured it was worth the plunge.

You have three Hot Dog options at Five Guys, all of the choices include as many toppings as you want (for no additional cost). 1. Kosher Dog (plain hot dog) 2. Cheese Dog and 3. Chili Cheese Dog.

I opted for the Cheese Dog and added ketchup, relish, and onions. Total cost: just under $4.

The anticipation of waiting for my dog after I ordered was killing me. If the dog was anything like Five Guy's burger I knew I was about to be catapulted into Hot Dog heaven.

A few minutes later, my number was called and I went rushing up to counter receipt in hand to get my dog. Wrapped tightly in aluminum foil, I slowly unwrapped it and got ready for my first bite.

My expectation was that the toppings would be falling all over the place and get all over my hands, shirt and pants. However, Five Guys was well prepared and this is where the hot dog magic actually began.

Most hot dogs have all of their toppings piled on top, make it hard to hold, hard to eat and very messy. Five Guys is a little smarter. First, they put all of the toppings on the bottom of the bun, then they take the grilled dog with cheese in the middle and put that on top of the sides. Basically...it's like an upside down hot dog.

While this may sound a bit off, it's actually one the best features of the dog and enhances the entire experience. This was the first time I was actually able to eat an entire hot dog without spilling half of it down my shirt.

Why didn't other people think of this sooner? Put the condiments on the bun...put the dog on top. Makes complete sense.

The dog was good too...grilled to perfection, nice and juicy with plenty of cheese it was extremely satisfying. Especially when it only cost around $4.

The famous Five Guys fries completed this experience. Not only do Five Guys fries taste amazing, there is also an abundant amount. First they fill up a styrofoam cup and put it in your brown bag, then they dump extra fries right in the bag. A regular sized cup of fries is actually like two large orders. Fresh, hot and seasoned perfectly the fries complemented my hot dog wonderfully.

So, Five Guys is famous for burgers but the big secret is their hot dog. Have you ever changed things up and gotten a hot dog instead of burger? If not, now might be a good time to try it.

  2. Shame on you, ketchup has no business being on a hot dog, unless you under the age of five. Mustard my friend is the only acceptable condiment. There finally opening a five guys near me today. I can't wait to try it

  3. I'm originally from the Philly area, and that was the ONLY place I ever had great hot dogs. 'Member Howard Johnson's? The Five Guys dogs are terrifically like them! Fabulosity!

  4. Over priced, over rated, and a crap shoot depending on which store you visit. They should have done a better job vetting the franchisee's. Money always gets in the way of quality and doing the right thing. Make your own!

  5. To the person who said "Over priced, over rated", Prehaps you should stick with the 99 cent menu at Mcdonalds. I prefer something made to order. A regular hamburger, and regular fry are enough for 2 people. Have you ever looked at the portions you get? If you cant afford it, fine, then say so. I cant afford a Ferrai, but that dosen't mean its not a great car.

  8. Five Guys makes Portillo's look like a bargain. Yes the food tastes great and fresh, but I don't think many people can justify spending over $10 in this economy for a meal, especially in a town where bar specials for 1/3-1/2 lb burgers go for $2-$3. For the price of a burger, fries, and drink I can get a bar special of a burger, fries, and a few beers.

$4 for a hot dog? Portillo's has the best dogs I've ever had and even their chili dog is $3.

  11. Looking forward to trying their hot dog. Their burger is good but simple which may be the appeal. Five Guys virgins should know their "regular" burgers are actually doubles and the "little" burgers are single patty. We got that unpleasant surprise our first visit and one order of fries is PLENTY enough to split if you get it to go because they fill the cup and half the take out bag with fries!

  14. I'm not sure if the hot dogs are kosher meat and if the buns are dairy....you may want to contact Five Guy directly.

  15. from the taste of it, i think they are using hebrew national hotdogs, but i might be mistaken. i don't feel sick to my stomach after eating them (which i do when i eat anything non hebrew national) but the buns i believe are the normal hotdog buns

  16. Five Guys has the best burgers bar none. Yes it is a bit on the pricy side, but I am willing to pay their price for the pleasure of eating a burger from their. I eat their at least a couple times a month.

As far as their hot dogs, I have not tried it. I am very picky about my hot dogs. Grew up in Buffalo and nothing whether New York, Chicago, or L.A. style ever compares to my hot dogs at Ted's. I will give Five Guys a try, hopefully it will be as good as their burgers.

  17. Went for the first time yesterday. The FF were cold and soggy. Like the spices on them but they need to get fresh and crispy. Burgers are great, just like you would make at home. Haven't tried the hot dog yet since only been once. Way to loud of rock music for us older folk. Overall rating pretty darn good.

  18. I've been to the new Five Guys at Fullerton and Clark in Chicago a half dozen times now, and haven't yet tried the hot dog, but I will next time. I think the burger is among the best I've had, and the fries are definitely the best. If someone gets cold, soggy fries (or anything else unsatisfactory), they should immediately take them back and ask for fresh ones -- I'm betting they would be provided in a quick and friendly manner. My only complaint is that the music is way too loud!

  19. Visted the Cape Coral, FL 5 Guys and love it. It's a 30 mile drive one way. The music is a bit offensive and "LOUD". Tried the hot dog plain. Don't like it at all. They cut it down the center and cook it on the cook top filleted in half. Reminds me of fried bologna sandwich when I was a kid. The bun was not folded, but in two separate pieces, separated like a sandwich, didn't like the concept of serving it that way and the hot dog was way too greasy cooking it this way. Stick to the Burgers, you can't go wrong with a 80-20 mix of meat to fat - Can you say "Juicy"?

  20. Hot Dogs are "Hebrew National" for those who asked. The plain Hot Dog at Cape Coral, FL costs $2.99. Single cheese burger is $3.99 and a double cheese burger is $5.29. A regular French Fry (feeds 3 people) is 2.69 and a large drink is $2.19. My typical bill is $15 for a single, a double, one fry and one soda. Seems like a lot to me, since I'm always finding coupons and bargains these days, but I also drive 30 miles one way to enjoy this meal, but I have said it is worth it, but if it was to be in my own home town, I wouldn't be able to afford to go as often as I would like to, so I think the pricing will keep a lot of customers away, at least in this economy - we'll see...when you really enjoy something, you make room to accomodate it, but that just isn't possible for everyone, I know. Don't waste your time on the hot dog - nothing beats a flame broiled hot dog on your own grill! The music is typically too loud and you feel like you're shouting in a bar environment and it's "edgy- rock" music. The youth probably enjoy this, but I see the typical customer as family and 30 & 40 somethings. Maybe they aren't noticing who's buying and what they might like to hear. The sound of grease cooking is a mighty nice suggestion. We're constantly inindated with noise and televisions, seems no time to "TALK" to family any more. I know you can do that at home, but you're calling me out to your restaurant to spend my money, and I get so much noise with my money, I don't like that! They should break out of that direction, that every restaurant takes...TV's and noise. Yuk, stick with the food, and that's what brings them back, not the atmosphere.

  21. I recently went to the Five Guys in Lubbock Texas since I live about 40 miles out. Hot dog was very good but twice as much as the equivalent product at a local deli. Funny feeling when I noticed that the hot dog was "kosher" and the restaurant was "zagat" rated which is an Islamic tax term. Going to Dion's next trip.

  24. I recently dined (for the first time) at a five guys in my town; From the first minute I stepped through those doors it was nothing of an ordinary experience.... The Customer service was hands down the best I've encountered in some time, I got to pile all the fixings on, and it was the best greasy 2-handler burger I have had in quite a while.... The wait was not too long for fresh made to order burgers. Although the fries could of been cooked a little longer (I really like them crispy)I have made fresh cut ff before and next time I will just ask for them to cook them a little longer... No big deal, I loved the ones I had..... :)

  25. I went into the new Minnesota store today. I had good things about Five Guys... NOT IMPRESSED! My burgers were thin, and way over cooked. The bread was smashes and tasted a little dry. I won't be going back in the near future. I hope this was just an off day...
