Cross Country Food

There is only one place to get a New York Hot Dog.

In New York.

This presents a serious problem because I don't live in New York.

The Hot Dogs from the stands on the street aren't the only amazing thing, there is also Ray's Pizza, NYC Bagels and amazing desserts from Roxy's in Times Square.

So, when you live thousands of miles away from the food you love, what do you do?

Simple, you transport it across the country in your luggage.

Crazy right? I think not.

On my last trip to NYC I brought home on the plane with me a bagel from a bagel cart, a hot dog from a hot dog stand, dessert from Roxy and a piece of pizza.

I couldn't leave New York without it and for some reason it tasted even better when I got home....like I had access to a forbidden food.

I've also brought pizza from Mo Mo's in Tallahassee 5 hours home and have once ordered Cream Sticks from the Amish country in Ohio (they're amazing....look in to it).

Yes, while it may appear to be insane to carry food across the country to eat at home, it seems perfectly logical to me. Food is special and it's even more special when you can only get it in certain parts of the country.

So, have you done it? Have you carried food thousands of miles home with you because you couldn't live without it?

By the way if anyone is heading to Tampa from NYC anytime soon, can you please bring me a piece of pizza?

  1. Sorry, Dan, but I have to disagree on the best hot dogs. Have you tried Chicago hot dogs? They are marvelous! There is a chain of restaurants in the Chicago area that will send their great hot dogs and wonderful Chicago beef sandwiches.http://www.portillos.com/
    Love you site, though!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. It's exactly how I feel about White Castle hamburgers. I used to eat them all the time when I was up north. They're great on either side of a hangover. The last time I was in Ohio, I snagged up two Crave Cases and drove back down here. They were still awesome two days later!

  3. Dan,

I too have carried bagels across state lines. Best bagel shop in VA gets its bagels imported from NYC every week. They freeze them and I would bring them back to orlando with me everytime I was home. I've also carried my mom's kuggle (jewish soul food) on a flight. Totally worth it

  5. I love, love, love the plain white bread they sell in the supermarket in Ireland. Can't get anything like it here. Every time my ex-husband and I used to go, I'd bring back two loaves in my luggage. Then I'd freeze it and take it out only on special occasions.

  6. We need some type of network online where we can have food shipped from our favorite places all over the world.

Imagine a place online where you could say: I need food from this restaurant now and then someone would respond to you and send it to your home address......ah sounds like a fantasy.
