Stiffed!

I'll start with the ending of this story first.

I stiffed a server. No tip at all.

Before I get comments and emails telling me that I have committed a crime against humanity allow me to explain myself a little further.

We recently went to lunch at the Gallery Eclectic Bistro at International Plaza in Tampa, FL. This is a local restaurant that has a pretty good lunch spread. There were 6 of us at lunch that day and we arrived shortly after noon. Instead of going into every grueling detail of this outrageously awful restaurant experience, allow me to list out my reasons for not leaving a tip at the end of the meal.

1. We waited over 5 minutes for someone to come to our table.
2. Once our drink order was taken she disappeared for several minutes and then returned with only half of our drinks.
3. I had to get up from my seat and try and find her in the restaurant to ask for my drink. I never found our server and another server went and got her.
4. When she came back she still brought the wrong drinks and disappeared again.
5. She finally found her way back to the table and took our order.
6. Poof, she's gone again. This time for almost 20 minutes.
7. At this point I needed a refill and I was also starving. I got up to go find her again to ask where our food was and if I could have a refill. She was no where to be found and I had to ask another server to get her.
8. When I asked where our food was she gave the unusual and awkward answer of: "I think you're the next ticket." What the heck is that suppose to mean?! I assume it means that you haven't even STARTED our food and we've been here for OVER a half hour.
9. The food finally comes (almost an hour after we sat down). I ask what took so long...her answer: "Uh, probably because there was a party of 30 in front of you."
10. Guess what? The food was wrong.
11. Technically not wrong, even better: IT WAS COLD. What did you say about that party of 30 in front of us? Do you mean that our food has been sitting out getting cold because you didn't feel like running it out?
12. We send the food back.
13. It comes back a little bit later. Looks like it was taken through a microwave....how kind of them.
14. After we finish picking through the lunch we didn't even want anymore we asked for our checks and it took another 10 minutes.
15. Total time of the dining experience for lunch? An hour and a half.

I have never stiffed a server before. I used to be a server, I know first hand how challenging, stressful and annoying it can be. I also realize that there are several things that are beyond your control.

However after having to get up and look for her twice and her extremely negative, "I don't care attitude" I couldn't justify spending another penny. It wasn't just about the food being cold or taking forever, my biggest issue was the service and how she simply didn't seem to care that we were there or not.

So, am I evil or did I do the right thing? What would you have done?

  1. i'm pretty generous and forgiving when it comes to tipping (i also worked in restaurants for awhile), but sometimes, for whatever reason, not tipping is the only course you can take to stay sane.

  2. You did the right thing. I used to be a server, and a darn good one, and I have a particular set of standards; no matter what the mistakes, if the server is genuinely trying hard to do their best, if they seem truly apologetic when things aren't right, if I can see they are busting their butt to get things right...then I will tip, even if there are mistakes. But if they don't care, if they act like I'm annoying them by being there, forget it. As much as it hurts to do it, because it really does make me feel bad to not leave a tip, you should not reward someone for bad service.

  3. Very Nice. You only did one thing wrong and that's pay for your meal. It's totally awesome that you even considered a tip b/c I would have had to think twice about paying for a meal that took an hour and a half to get to me and when it did come it was cold. I've never been a server nor have I ever worked at a restaurant but one thing I do know and understand is that you should never have to pay, tip or deal with bad service, cold food and not being able to enjoy a nice meal without having to find someone and convince them to do their job.

  5. I completely agree. I am constantly rewarded with bad service attached to a big bill in the city. Although I have not been strong enough to leave no tip, I Will tip poorly if I feel the Server would rather slap me across the mouth than let me order dessert. So I support your decision. You should not feel bad for you have lost no Classy Points in my notebook. For you have boldly left NO TIP were a TIP be not deserved. I salute you and hope that I might, someday, be able to a stiff a Server and say, "I did not very much enjoy that, thank you."

  7. I really hope that no one else in your party left a tip either. One time, I went out with my friend and our waiter SUUUUUCCCCKKKKEEEDDD. I didn't leave a tip and she did....well, on the way out, I took the money my friend had left and slipped it back into her bag later.

  8. Believe it or not it was difficult for me to NOT leave a tip, even though I was so furious. From what you're all telling me though I guess I'm not alone.

The bottom line is that awful service and a negative attitude simply can't be tolerated. I think sometimes servers might take tips for granted and just assume they will always get a tip, no matter what they do.

  9. I think you did the right thing. I tip according to performance, food quality and attention to detail. When it's excellent, I'll tip 50% or more for great service, but my tips usually hover around 20-25%.

There have been a few times where there have been no tips at all. Similar situations to what you're describing, and sometimes even worse. One time, I had the owner of a place come out to tell me (after waiting 95 minutes for a pizza) that I wasn't welcome there anymore because I "looked impatient". I asked where my pizza was and he said, "We decided not to make it." WTF was that? I ended up shitting in the sink of his restaurant because I was THAT furious.

So yeah, I say she got off lucky with no tip.

  10. After about 45 minutes I would have been talking to a manager. I had a similar experience at Epcot recently. We finally called the manager to our table and he comped the lunches that were near inedible.

  11. With about 5 years of server-experience under my belt, I can say that poor service is a sign of one of three things: 1)understaffing in restaurants 2)poor server training or 3)poor supervision. Either way, the best course of action is talk to a manager before you get steaming mad...that way something can be done right away and maybe the story would have had a happy ending... like free dessert, etc. It many still be worth it to write a letter to the manager.

  12. I am also in the Tampa Bay area (and have owned a restaurant here), and this being a tourist destination, I am surprised a 15-18% gratuity was not already ON your bill, Dan, at that International Mall location. Often, unsuspecting tourists (and locals), do not notice that and tip TWICE!

  13. I also meant to add - more often than not, the automatic gratuity goes onto the bills when there are 5 or more people in the party - so BEWARE!

  14. Wow that has got to be the funniest thing I've ever read. I just woke up half my office area. Dennis Baldwin's post about shitting in the sink hahaha. Please tell me you actually did that .

  15. I would've spoken to the manager.

  16. See what I would have done if I had cash would be to tip the other people that the waitress has to tip out. (When my sister worked at a restaurant she had to tip out the host/ess and busser about 10% of her tips.) And I would have done it to in her face. Although the waitress was a complete bumbling idiot, those that provided you "services" should not get penalized in the pocket book. (In fact the other day at Chili's my normal waitress was expoing, and actually did more for my table than the actual waitress, and I gave the lady expoing half of the waitress' tip.

We one time walked out on a tip but the manager had to comp our meal anyways...
