Qdoba Copied Chipotle

It only took a trip half-way across the country to get me to try Qdoba Mexican Grill.

Several readers have been asking me to give it a try for quite some time now, however the timing was never right. There was either a Chipotle to close by, or the Qdoba was farther than I wanted to drive.

When I got off a plane at the Indianapolis Airport yesterday and saw a glowing Qdoba right in front of my face, I decided I couldn't put it off any longer.

People get strange when trying a new restaurant (or I do at least). I walked awkwardly in and peered over the glass to look at the food and much to my surprise it looked identical to Chipotle. The cheese, meat, salsas, and set up was the same...they even smelled alike.

I asked the employee if she had ever been to a Chipotle. She answered no (clearly the reason why she was working at Qdoba) but she did tell me that people say to her all the time that Qdoba copied Chipotle.

I walked out of the restaurant. For some strange reason I felt like I was cheating on Chipotle.

But....it looked good.....the prices were right....and I was hungry.

I went back in to look over the menu and discovered they offer the same products as Chipotle (no surprise there): "Naked Burritos" (aka, Burrito Bowl), Tacos and Burritos. Interestingly enough they also have breakfast items which looked good on the menu.

I got a naked burrito with my usual: half chicken/half pork, rice, salsa, corn salsa, LOTS of cheese and sour cream.

When the employee got to the cheese station I said, "I want A LOT of cheese." She said, "No problem." With pride should dug her hand deep into the cheese pan and came up with a fist full of cheese. There was no sprinkling here - she dumped it on joyfully and went in for another helping.

This as you know is a huge difference between them and Chipotle. Chipotle sprinkles on cheese like it's gold and they're stingy on the meat portions as well.

I shook up my naked burrito to mix it all and dug in. It tasted great. The salsa was a little less chunky than Chipotle but still had good spice (she also told me their salsa isn't homemade, hence why it was more runny). The chicken isn't as good as Chipotle. It had a different type of seasoning that was more spicy. However the pork and cheese tasted the same.

Basically in a blind taste test I would know the difference, but they taste just as good. It's just like Coke and Pepsi - I know the difference, I prefer Coke, but I can live with Pepsi. The same goes for Qdoba.

I like Qdoba. It's far superior to Moe's, not quite as perfect as Chipotle (assuming they give you the portion you deserve).

However the bottom line is Qdoba literally copied Chipotle right down to every single detail. Even the decor is awkwardly similar.

So - who do you prefer? Are you for Qdoba or Chipotle?

Qdoba - for the handful of cheese. Locally they are VERY involved in the community.

Thanks for coming to Indy. Hope you had a good visit. I'm sure your session was inspiring to many!

You know, I really like both, but what it comes down to is the rice. Qdoba has a lime-cilantro rice that knocks my socks off every time. Also? They give discounts for being a Hyatt employee.

@Deb - the handful of cheese was definitely well worth it. Thanks for inviting me to Indy, I had an awesome time!

@AJ yes Chipotle is flippin good.

@Christine here's the thing. I went back the next night cause it was so good and I tried the queso....it was well worth the 89cents.

Chipotle
Qdoba (one near disney gives a "discount" of a $.25 drink)
Taco Bell
Moes

Taco Bell I put above moes just because the only reason I go to Moes is for Moes Monday.

Haven't tried Tiajana Flats yet.

@Anonymous nice they give a discount....I would venture to say that Taco Bell and Moe's is the same quality one just cost more than the other.

Tijuana Flats is very different than anyone else - a little more pricey too...you have to go in with an open mind.

Moe's is the armpit of America.

The only problem is I have free Moe's for a year from camping outside before a store Grand Opening.

CHIPOTLE! yeah

Chipotle is much better. Qboda is similar but the flavors just don't come together the way they so at Chipolte, plus they copied Chipolte so shamelessly!

Qdoba by a landslide - based on consistency of quality. Out in Colorado, where both chains were formed, the differences between the two are slight. However, when I had to move to the Baltimore area, the differences were huge. I almost couldn't chew the seemingly grade Q beef that Chipotle was trying to serve in D.C. However, Qdoba's fresh quality and tasty salsas are the same great taste every where I go.

I'm not sure why you state that Qdoba "copies" Chipotle? Both were founded in Colorado and not that many years apart. The overall concept is hardly original (it's stated that Chipolte's founder got the idea to open the first restaurant in Denver after seeing the "taqueria" concept in San Francisco's mission district).

In any case, Qdoba (orginally called Z-Teca) is better by a landslide in my opinion.

I should have also stated that NEITHER is as good as Illegal Pete's, another local chain we have here in Colorado. Pete's actually uses large spoons to mix all the ingredients together before they wrap the burrito. Sounds simple but in my opinion, this is much preferable to chomping down on a "vein" of sour cream or running out of one ingredient before you've finished due to poor layering.

Qdoba. Because the queso dip that they put on the queso burrito is nuts, it makes me cry. Now if Chipotle had that I would be more into Chipotle, but they don't and I agree with you, they're super stingy.

Qdoba hands down. Chipotle is a second place. Qdoba's habanero sauce absolutely rocks. Also, Qdoba is not stingy with their rice and black beans. I always have to as to have extra rice & black beans put on when I go to Chipotle. Oh, and Qdoba's chips are much lighter, tastier & crisper than Chipotle.

My friend diana here argues in favor of chipotle but yet i will live strong to qdoba....beef queso burrito with black beans, cheese, sour cream, and verde salsa = awesome

Not sure where you got the picutre of the Qdoba at the top of this post but I am fairly certain it's the one that I work at. From my experience as an employee at Qdoba there is a problem with consistency at Chipotle. Some places have fantastic food while others have problem with the texture of their meats. Qdoba, admitedly, has a more consistent taste profile from coast to coast due to the manner in which food is distributed to each store. Having tried both in several areas of the country I have to pin my favorite as Qdoba. The queso is the best and the tortilla soup/gumbo is the best thing I have ever eaten. Those are the reasons why I chose to work at Qdoba.

Qdoba copied Chipotle because the founder of Qdoba used to be a service manager at a chipotle. He got fired for copying recipe files and administrative files. A year later Qdoba opens . . . Back then, Chipotle didnt have the privacy policies it has today, so they didn't win their law suit because the service manager dude had changed the recipes and style just enough.
