The Traveling Cup

Maybe you haven't done it. Maybe you have. Or maybe you've never even thought about it.

I have been known on several occasions to turn my "to-go beverage" from Chick-Fil-A or Panera Bread into a traveling drink. It starts like this...

It's a Saturday afternoon, we're running errands and we stop at Chick-Fil-A for lunch. As we're eating I go up and get a few refills (have to get my money's worth). When we're finishing up, my wife tells me that we have to go to the mall. I pause and think - is there a Chick-Fil-A at that mall? Yes. Sweet.

I save the cup and take it with me to the mall where I proceed to get another refill (sometimes twice). When we're leaving the mall my wife tells me we have to go to the other mall (of course) because the mall we were just at didn't have what we needed (obviously, why did we come here in the first place?). I pause and think - is there a Chick-Fil-A at the other mall? Yes. Sweet.

I keep the cup a little longer and after this mall visit I have turned one drink purchase into about 8 refills. I have also done this with Panera Bread cups and taken them to different Panera Breads (only on the same day).

Technically speaking I believe this is completely legal. I purchased the drink, therefore I am entitled on the day of purchase to unlimited refills.

Some of you may think this is evil, others may find it to be rather genius.

I'll let you decide.

  1. I used to work at the Millennia Mall Panera and the mall employees used to purchase a small coffee in the morning and then come back throughout the day to refill it up all the time. As long as you refill on day on purchase that's fine to me. Now if you start saving cups....

  2. I don't think its necessarily legal or illegal... but most places have the policy of "no refills once you leave the premises."

Seeing as chick-fil-a is all corporate, I would say this story is more acceptable... but had this been, say, a subway, where they are all franchises, than you would be cutting into the profit margin technically of the other subways, as they are dispensing product, for no revenue.

  3. This might be the most amazing idea ever. Nathan and I do something similar. We order one drink, He drinks his first, then I get my drink to go, when he's done.

  4. genius... being that they make the bulk of their profit from us purchasing the beverage anyways, i definitely think this is legal and should be taken advantage of! free refills all day

  5. I think it's legal as well, as long as it's on the same day of purchase...and all of you are right, the real profit is when they sell customers the "cup" not the drink.

  6. My friend Lor....uh I mean her name is Sally, is addicted to CFA and their Diet Lemonade. She confessed to us the other night her struggle with the refills. I think a lot of people wrestle with this issue. Now, she knows she is not alone. Thank you for your post.
