Lemon Slices of Death

I used to only order water at restaurants. Then about two years ago I became an iced tea drinker.

With my tea, I demand a lemon. It adds a certain burst of flavor that makes my tea most satisfying.

I was sent this video link today from a loyal reader about - Lemon Slices of Death. This video goes into detail about a researcher who has concluded that lemon slices in drinks at restaurants are full of germs.....obviously.

As consumers there are a few things we should know about lemon slices:

1. In most cases they are cut by hand.
2. The server (I don't care what restaurant you're at) grabs a lemon by hand.
3. It's highly possible that before landing in your drink it lands on the table in the back and gets picked up again.

If you are going to get lemon, you should already know that we don't live in a ideal germ free world. If you honestly believe that your lemon is properly cared for and delivered germ free into your glass than you probably think everyone washes their hands when they use the restroom too.

My thought here is this - a researcher could go into any restaurant in the country and come up with conclusions about how something in the restaurant could cause you bodily harm.

For example: The Pager.

People touch it, they hold it, put it in their pocket, sit on it, give it to their kid, and they drool on it. News flash - no one cleans those things. So after your 15 minute wait of holding a germ infested pager, why don't you order an appetizer that requires you eating with your hands. But to be safe, you better NOT even think about getting a lemon in your drink...who knows how dirty the server's hands are.

  1. My whole life I have placed a Lemon in my water when I go out to eat. I have never gotten sick or really cared. I can't drink water without lemon in it...so unless you are going to get me a personal lemon cutter that cuts all my lemons for me before I go out...I will continue to use those lemons. They have been a part of my life for the past 20 years, I can't just give up on them now.

  2. I like to think of dirty lemons like a sort of vaccine. I have never gotten sick from having a lemon in my drink (which I always have) so therefore, all that bacteria which I am putting in my body is merely allowing my body to build up immunities to it for when we meet again in the future. So far, so good.
