Why my Krispy Kreme Closed

Krispy Kreme changed the world...for awhile.

With those "hot and ready" glazed donut creations it was nearly impossible to resist. When Krispy Kreme first opened in our neighborhood about 5 years ago the line was out to the street as everyone waited desperately for a bite of the sugary goodness.

People came to school wearing hats and carrying boxes of donuts. Everyone who didn't have a cool hat and a Krispy Kreme donut was full of envy. This craze lasted for a few years. People would be waiting in line at 9pm just to get a donut. Why? Because they were amazing and you couldn't get that same sugar tasting donut anywhere else.

Then things started to change. The fad that was Krispy Kreme started to die out quickly. It was always a little better than Dunkin Donuts. But then Dunkin Donuts realized they could offer just as good of donuts along with amazing coffee, bagels, munchkins, and breakfast sandwiches.

Krispy Kreme didn't seem to follow the same path. The people who were obsessing about Krispy Kreme realized that Dunkin had more to offer.

Not only did Dunkin have more to offer but people seemed to get tired of Krispy Kreme (including me). It just wasn't as good as the first time you had it and after about 6 donuts you didn't feel to good about yourself anymore.

The Krispy Kreme that use to be packed with people was suddenly empty - even during prime breakfast hours. Then about a year ago it closed.

I had a Dunkin Donuts glazed munchkin this morning (yes my wife knows about it). It was amazing. Hot, fresh, covered in glaze and delicious.

It's almost like Krispy Kreme never existed. It's like an awkward fad from the 1990s...(think Pogs and Beanie Babies).

  1. Here's the thing...my favorite doughnut in the world is a glazed creme filled one. Dunkin Donuts has a powdered sugar creme filled doughnut, which is extraordinarily messy, and it has a microscopic drip of creme in it. It is ANNOYING. Krispy Kreme has a glazed creme filled donut which is STUFFED with creme. Like, it squirts out when you bite into it. For a sugar addict(me), that is the greatest thing in the world. For that reason, Krispy wins for me. Unfortunately, I can't even tell you where one is located anymore. I do, however, appreciate Dunkin Donuts for their love of their customers and America and all that.

  2. I was just about to post when I noticed Sac's reply. I was going to say the SAME exact thing. The Glazed Creme Filled Krispy Kreme doughnut is the #1 doughnut on this planet. I will argue this to my death bed. You can't go wrong taking the butter creme icing from publix cakes and putting it in the middle of a glazed doughnut. They have one here in Orlando by the mall at Millennium. I will say I stop in every time I see the "Hot" sign on.

I do like dunkin doughnuts for their breakfast sandwiches but not their doughnuts. They just don't compare. Krispy Kreme is #1 in doughnut making and I believe they always will be.

  3. So I might be the only person in the world, but I don't necessarily get all hot and bothered when I see the hot sign on at krispy kreme - I actually like them once they've cooled down a bit. Of course, when it first moved to the corner of duncan and gulf to bay I was all about getting hot and fresh donuts since all I ever knew of krispy kreme was the box of a dozen at publix, but after a while the sugar overload that is a hot krispy kreme donut made me nostalgic for the old days of getting them at publix. I am, however, referring only to the regular glazed donuts, the lemon filled's are what gave meaning to my life, and that is why I was devastated when they closed krispy kreme, not for the regular glazed ones. All of this talk of krispy kreme is making me very in the mood though, and I think I might make a donut run a bit later (since we have one in tallahassee) which is definitely a perk.

  4. Wait, so that's why the krispy kreme closed? Someone told me there was a huge scandal...
Hmm your story sounds more reasonable

  5. It is funny you wrote about this because I live by the Millenia Mall in Orlando and I used to have a Krispy Kreme and a Dunkin Donuts on either corner of me. Last week the Dunkin Donuts closed which was always busy and out of donuts and the Krsipy Kreme that is always dead is still open. Go figure?

  6. OMG If you are all trully donut lovers than you would be blown away by this mom and pop donut shop located in Kissimmee, a half a mile East of the turnpike. They are baked fresh daily right at the location. They have things youve never tasted! Its called BULA Donuts. The glazed donuts are awesome! HANDS DOWN THEY ARE THE BEST DONUTS IN FLORIDA

  7. I agree I visited Bula on my last trip to Fl and I'm craving them now, I took a ride down to the KK but I wasn't blown away by the hot donuts I must admit. Bula donuts made a lasting impression the only thing that can compare is the tres leche donut from the donut plant in NYC, which lucky for me I have access to anytime! Can't wait to get back to Bula though :)
